The RetroFuture Engine is interested in strong stories. That just goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway. As our name suggests, we want stories that are retrofuturist -- the genres desired are below -- but we also want stories with an "engine:" we want stories with power to move us, strength to keep us going, and ingenuity to move forward in our knowledge of the world.

Here's what we want:

  • Stories that focus on technology and its ramifications. 
  • Stories that investigate societies and technology inside and out of the typical "Western" mentality
  • Adventure stories with solid plots and strong characters
  • Introspective stories that delve deeper than crinolines and top hats
  • Stories that dip into bits of magic realism or slipstream
  • Progressive, feminist, and lgbt-friendly stories are also welcome
Here's what we don't want:
  • Zombies, vampires, or werewolves
  • Automatons with no purpose
  • Purely aesthetic stories
  • Atom- or nano-punk (or anything arbitrarily labeled *punk)
Genres we like:
  • Steampunk
  • Dieselpunk
  • Gaslight Fantasy
  • Clockwork
  • Romantic -- NOT Romance
  • Period-appropriate Biopunk
